One of my biggest regrets of 2020 was not using all that time stuck at home to learn more! So, this year I have made it a personal goal to be more productively and learn at least 2 new skills.
As a child I use to watch my mum embroider for hours, she handmade my bedsheets, pillow cases and clothes with the most intricate designs. So, call it nostalgia or boredom but I knew this is what I wanted to pickup and when I mentioned it to her she got so excited that I couldn’t back out!
Embroidered clothes are trending whether thats a logo/ brand name or a more elaborate pattern and they’re usually far more expensive than a traditional print. I was eager to learn so I could customise my boring old sweatshirts and t-shirts without having to spend a lot of money.
Before I let loose on my clothes, the first thing I needed to do was learn how to stitch so I bought a bunch of kits to help me practice and get more comfortable. You can get hold of these kits on Amazon, Etsy, Ebay as well as other craft supply stores. The cool thing about the kits are that they come with everything you need to get started. They typically include: an embroidery hoop, scissors, cotton fabric, needles and different coloured soft threads for the design. They’re also quite inexpensive and the perfect way to try it out. I have completed 2 designs and have started on my third and am enjoying it a lot, especially in my spare time when I’ve had my fill of Netflix. I’ve linked a couple of great starter kits if you’re looking to have a go, click the links below to check it out:
Tip: if you’re nervous to go straight into a pattern you can purchase stitch practice samples which allow you to try out different types of stitches before you put it into practice on a design. I’ve linked one below but if you search ‘beginner stitch sampler’ you should get a bunch!

Le me know if you do try embroidering and what designs you have mastered!
