Amsterdam

This is the place where ‘day trips abroad’ started!

I’ve been Amsterdam three times now, the first in 2017 and most recently in 2019. All three trips were for the day. The flight is super quick and then you jump onto a direct train from the airport into the city centre. If you purchase a travel card you’ll be able to use all public transport throughout Amsterdam for the day and then back to the airport to catch the return flight, which is what we did.

There is so much to do and see in Amsterdam and you can get through a lot in a day. Everything is easily accessible via public transport or walking. Each time I’ve visited I’ve seen different places and done new activities.

Have a look at the list below if you need some inspiration:

  • Anne Frank House
  • Tulip Fields & Keukenhof Gardens – only during the springtime, when they bloom
  • Flower Market
  • Visit a museum – the world-famous Rijksmuseum and Van Goh museum
  • Visit the iconic IAmsterdam sign
  • Canal cruise – Amsterdam is a network of canals
  • The Prince’s Canal – in the beautiful neighbourhood of Jordaan
  • Narrow Houses – a strip of houses near Centraal Station
  • Red Light District
  • Madurodam miniature village – see the national landmarks and feel like a giant in this theme park
  • A’Dam Lookout & Over The Edge Swings
  • Windmills at the Zaanse Schans
  • Hotel Zaandam – cartoon style building giving the illusion of traditional Dutch houses stacked on each other
  • Try a local stroopwafel – popular caramel-filled wafer cookie
  • Dam square
  • Madame Tussauds
  • Take a city bike tour
  • Vondelpark – the city’s favourite park
  • Staalmeestersbrug Love Lock Bridge
  • Sample the Dutch street food
  • ‘Wake me up when I’m famous’ – street art
  • Hortus Botanicus – botanical gardens

Although I’ve been only for the day, Amsterdam is a place where you could easily spend a few days and not get bored. Have fun if you get to visit!
