It was my sisters 30th earlier this year and she wanted to go somewhere special to celebrate and whats more special than an evening in Mayfair! Park Chinois is a uniquely glamorous Asian restaurant in Central London. Full to the brim with all the good stuff from exquisite food and drinks to live singing and dancing, this is a hidden gem of a venue.
There are 2 main dining areas at Park Chinois which consist of the club chinois and the salon de chine. We dined in the salon and it was quite the experience. The salon is described as Chinese fine dining in intimate Mayfair surroundings. Gilded ceilings and silk lampshades softly illuminate a dining room where Shanghai glamour meets modern sophistication. Serving up a selection of Chinese classics, and a handcrafted dim sum menu whilst you listen to the live band with London’s finest live jazz.
On to the most important part; the food! We ordered a number of dishes from the menu to share as we wanted to try a little of everything. The food arrived quite promptly after placing our order and everything looked great. The portions were fairly generous and their menu offers quite a variety so there is definitely something for everyone. I have listed what we ate below:
- Shanghai Soleil – mocktail
- Crispy Chilli Chicken, Szechuan Peppers
- Soft Shell Crab, Bird Eye Chilli, Curry Leaf
- Crispy Satay Chicken, Tamarind, Peanut Sauce
- Salt & Pepper Squid, Papaya Salad
- Hot & Sour Soup
- Spicy Hand-Pulled Noodles, Corn-Fed Chicken
- Yangzhou Fried Rice, Corn-Fed Chicken & King Prawn
We ordered a lot and looking back between the 4 of us, the food was too much! My favourite dish was the crispy satay chicken, it was super flavourful and the chicken was tender with the lightest, crispiest skin. I will say, overall the food did fall a little flat for me as I don’t think the flavours and quality of the dishes reflected the high price point. Some of the dishes were extremely mediocre which was disappointing. However, I will add this is meant to be a dining ‘experience’ so I guess the entertainment plays a heavy part in that. Although the live music was good it wasn’t worth the £20 per person (total £80) charge added to our bill on top of service charge!
To conclude, I did have a good time but I don’t think I will be rushing back, I wasn’t blown away by the food or the service, especially as some of the servers hover and kept walking by non-stop which did ruin the atmosphere. Being located in Mayfair and charging the prices they do, my expectations were high and they definitely weren’t met. Anyway, let us know if you visit and what your thoughts were, also be sure to leave us recommendations on where we should go next!
