Solis

Another food rec, are we surprised? Anyway, I visited Solis earlier this year and OMG I was blown away. I had seen a bunch of videos about Solis coming up on my Tiktok FYP and there was definitely a split opinion of it in the comments section. A lot of people thought it was overrated and others thought it was fantastic, for me it was the latter where I had an amazing experience.

Named after Juan Díaz de Solis, a 16th-century explorer said to have been the first European to land on what is now modern day Uruguay, Solis is a chicken and steak grill, with flavour influences from both sides of the voyage, including Spain, Portugal, Uruguay and Argentina.

The menu itself isn’t huge but in my opinion the few dishes they offer they do really well. Straight from the grill come spatchcock chicken with smoked Aji-Aji oil and flat-iron steak with peppery steak sauce, both served with Asador salad and crispy fries. Para Picar include spiced tuna devilled eggs (Huevos Rellenos), street-style corn on the cob, and crispy beef croquetas with caramelised onion. Bocadillos on the lunch menu comprise soft brioche rolls filled with a choice of grilled steak, onion and herb spread; chicken with garlicky Mojo Verde and Gordal olives; or beef meatballs, tomato salsa and scorched cheese.

As it was only 2 of us we couldn’t order as much as we wanted however everything we did order was delicious. My sister and I aren’t huge meat eaters hence why we didn’t order the steak but we didn’t miss out as the chicken was incredible. I have listed what we ordered below:

  • Homemade Limonada
  • Watercress Salad
  • Chicken Bocadillo
  • Grilled Chicken Combinado
  • Fritas
  • Aji Picante Sauce
  • Ice Cream Sundae

My favourite from the above had to be the chicken bocadillo which is a brioche sub roll with green mojo chicken salad, coriander and gordal olives. I cannot explain how amazing this was, the flavours were intense, well balanced and the roll was packed full of that chicken salad. They use the mojo verde sauce in this roll which honestly I couldn’t get enough of! Regrettably we shared the roll but next time I would definitely get one for myself!
