Hakkasan

January and February are busy birthday months in my household therefore making them the perfect opportunity to try new restaurants! Hakkasan has been on my ‘foodie bucket list’ for a while so I was super excited when my sister picked it for her birthday dinner.

The restaurant is located in central London behind a random narrow street, it took us a minute to find it but once inside you’re transported to a chic, low lit dining area. From the scents, sounds and spectacular decor it is a feast for the eyes before you even set sight on the food. It’s a pretty big dining space but it feels quite intimate due to the dim lighting and wooden separators between sections.

I am not a huge fan of waiters who hover (it’s probably a British thing) but I was actually glad for the attentive waiter we had and how informative he was. He helped us pick dishes, make substitutions where we preferred more of one thing than the other, as well as taking questions from us directly to the chef.

To kick things off we ordered some delicious mocktails. They have a non-alcoholic drinks section on the menu however they can take pretty much any cocktail and make it without the alcohol. We went for a virgin Hakka which was a delicious blend of lychee, lime, coconut and passionfruit. With regards to the food I have listed everything we ate below:

  • Sweetcorn Soup
  • Supreme Dim Sum – Substituted Without Beef
  • Sesame Prawn Toast
  • Salt & Pepper Squid
  • Morel Mushroom & Vegetable Spring Roll
  • Spicy Prawns
  • Vegetable Fried Rice
  • Hakka Noodles
  • Selection of Ice Creams

The dishes came out well paced and everything was freshly made served beautifully. The portion sizes were pretty generous and we shared most of the dishes between the 4 of us. We also ordered doubles of what we wanted more of, like the main prawn dish and the rice. Even though we enjoyed the food I did feel like it fell a little short of my expectations, which honestly were quite high. I was hoping for a little more creativity with the dishes and bolder flavours. With that being said I would still revisit Hakkasan because overall we had a great experience and I would recommend you visit to try it for yourself! Let us know if you do and what your thoughts are.
