Hi everyone! Today I’m bringing you a cool tutorial that you can easily do while at home. I love the idea of decorating a space with mirrors as it opens the area up and brings in light. However, mirrors can be pricey especially large artistic ones so this is an inexpensive hack to jazzing up a plain mirror. If you’re on Instagram I’m sure you’ve seen some hype around this trend and how nice it looks when done.
For this DIY I used expanding foam to decorate two mirrors, one I found during a clear-out and another I got in the sale. The process itself is simple and inexpensive, I purchased the foam online from Screwfix for under £6 each. I ended up using one full can and half a second can, you may need more or less depending on the size of the mirror you use. I used two different mirrors one with a thinner border and the other with a thicker one but the outcome was fairly similar on both.
Anyway, if you want to have a go at this then peep the steps below.
What you will need:
- A mirror
- Expanding foam
- Cover of some sort to protect the ground e.g. newspaper, cardboard, tarp
Step 1:
The first thing you want to do is clean your mirror and prep the area you will be working on. Cover the space with the protection of your choice and ensure that it is at least twice the size of the mirror, the spraying process can get a little messy, so this is to avoid double cleaning after. Tip: do this in an open ventilated area to avoid breathing in any excess fumes.
Step 2:
Don’t lay your mirror directly on the tarp or newspaper, have it resting on a box or some cans. This is to prevent the foam from sticking to the protective covering below the mirror.
Step 3
Practice your sprays. Take a piece of cardboard or newspaper and spray onto it so you can get used to the way it dispenses and get comfortable using it. This will prevent you from making any mistakes on the actual mirror.
Step 4:
Get spraying! Be aware that the foam will expand as it dries to approximately twice the original size. Spray in a zig-zag pattern as that will make the design more textured and interesting. Leave the foam to set and dry overnight and voila you are done. I decided to leave mine the creamy/white colour, however, feel free to paint over it if you like.
Hope this inspires you to try some DIY around the house, drop a comment below what you think and any other hacks/ tutorials you’re loving at the moment!
