A Chilled Christmas

Disclaimer: I don’t actually celebrate Christmas but I do love this time of year and I’m all for an opportunity to put on a spread and have a fun get together! My family and I are all off from work/school during this period so it’s the perfect time to have some fun and just enjoy each other’s company. So here’s my take on chilled Christmas day, enjoy!

First thing first: cosy PJs! Since I wasn’t throwing a formal party or anything, spending the day in a pair of comfy (Christmas themed) PJs was a dream. This year my sisters and I went for matching ones including slippers. It was super cute and relaxed, which was great especially when cooking, and trying to get everything ready.

Everyone being at home meant breakfast would be expected, I didn’t want my family members coming in and out of the kitchen disturbing me while I was cooking so I decided to make them all crêpes. The recipe was super simple and it didn’t take me long to whip them up. I put a little festive spin on them and they went down a treat!

I bought this puzzle over a year ago and we had yet to try it out. I thought it would be the perfect activity for everyone to do in between all the eating. I set it up on a coffee table in the living room and we all enjoyed putting it together more than we thought we would. Usually, we play board games where it can get rowdy and competitive so this was a nice, relaxed alternative.

Before the main feast, I wanted to put something out for everyone to nibble on. I didn’t want it to be too heavy since the dinner was going to be a lot! I decided on a Christmas tree fruit board and a fruity punch. It went over really well and found that we were able to enjoy the dinner more since we weren’t stuffed from binging on snacks.

The table setting was honestly my favourite; I wanted to go for a simple theme with a little pop of colour. The centrepiece was made from faux eucalyptus leaves and in between, we set some confetti, candles and apples. I also added name cards just to give it some personalisation; I found these reindeer ones on eBay. They went with the vibe as they weren’t over the top and added something extra to the table.

The food was delicious if I do say so myself. I planned the menu based on what everyone enjoys. My family don’t eat turkey so we opted for chicken as the main dish and I made a bunch of trimmings to go with it. When cooking a large meal for many people the trick is to prep, I did as much in advance as possible and found that helped on the day. Another trick was to use a buffet station; this was a great way to keep food warm once it was cooked until it was time to eat. It was also the perfect informal way to serve the food where everyone could help themselves.

If I’m being completely honest I could not be bothered to make dessert so I put out a tray of various sweet treats that everyone could eat after dinner. This turned out great since it was there throughout the evening for people to pick at, plus it saved me from having more plates and cutlery to wash.

We finished the day with a couple of our favourite Christmas movies and just lounged around in food comas, it was the best!

Anyway, I hope you all had a fabulous holiday, whether you celebrate or not and you enjoyed my take on a chilled Christmas. Also, comment below what your favourite thing about this time of year is!

Thanks Parj for this great summary of your version of Christmas – I particularly loved the table decoration set up too! So simple but festive and not too over-done :). The puzzle was a lovely touch too – great alternative you can dip in/out of – I have a few puzzles not touched either so this has inspired me to get them out and complete. An enjoyable read. Loved the Pjays too!! :). Have a lovely holiday break 2020.
